False Promises/False Premises

Luma 2024 Proposal:

We propose a new project that uses video projection, coding, and artificial intelligence, to be installed in the second-floor windows above Anthony Brunelli Fine Arts. We have already secured permission from John Brunelli to use this space.

Our project imagines the spiritual and creative potential of artificial intelligence. Taking inspiration from some pre-scientific method philosophies, we focused on the desire to organize the known universe into seven different categories. Whether it is the seven notes, the seven classical planets, the seven deadly sins, the seven steps in the great chain of being, or the seven alchemic metals this mirrors the behaviors of current AI models when they hallucinate. They cannot test their theories and therefore create a fiction to reconcile what they don’t know. This failure of pre-scientific method philosophy has great cultural repercussions even to this day, and AI models risk following a similar fallacious path if this is not acknowledged.

We will create a grid system that divides the four windows, with each section housing a moving montage of human-made images symbolizing each of the categories. In the final, eighth section, there will be a montage of AI-generated interpretations of those same seven elements.
